Risk of Blindness From This Retina Related Disease

Retinal inflammation is commonly referred to as inflammation of the curtain of the eye. The macula, in the middle of the retina, is as small as a thin layer. It is the macula itself, which helps us to see, read, stitch, or recognize colors and faces clearly. When fluid begins to form in the macula, the retina swells, in medical parlance called "macular edema". When fluid accumulates in the macula, it swells and hardens. When inflammation increases and blood vessels begin to block, things begin to appear blurred. The greater and thicker the swelling, the more blurred the objects appear.

1- Diabetes: Blood vessels are damaged due to the increase in the level of sugar in the blood. Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a condition caused by diabetes retinopathy when diabetes is very high. Fluids in the retina cause swelling in the tissues, including the macula. Diabetic retinopathy affects the eyesight of people. The main reason for this is DME.

2-  Age-related vacuolar degeneration (AMD): The macula is swollen due to fluid secretion from abnormal blood vessels due to aging.

3- Retinal Vein Oscillation (RVO): Due to diseases associated with the blood vessels, the veins of the retina get obstructed and the blood gets deposited in the macula.

4- Genetic Tendency: Some problems occur from generation to generation such as retinitis pigmentosa or restenosis.

5- Medications: Side effects of some medicines can also cause inflammation. Also, it happens many times even after having an eye tumor or after eye surgery. Severe injury can cause inflammation in the retina.

Escape Measures

Unbalanced lifestyle and obesity are the main reason for the ever-increasing cases of macular edema. Due to which the risk of diabetes and hypertension increases, the risk of vacuolar edema increases. To avoid macular edema, do the following-
  1. Show dairy products along with green vegetables and fruits.
  2. Get a good 6 to 8 hours of sleep.
  3. Do not smoke
  4. Control blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  5. Be physically active and do regular eye exercises.
  6. Protect your eyes from injury.

The Treatment

Medications, lasers, and surgery are all three effective in the treatment of macular edema, with intravitreal injection (IVI) being the most prevalent. If macular edema is at one location then a focal laser can be performed. After mostly focal laser treatment, vision improves. Similarly, IVI is a daycare procedure in which a very small amount of medicine is injected into the eye through a small needle. At the same time, surgery for the treatment of macular edema is called a vitrectomy. In this, the solid-liquid in the retina is removed. If the cause is cataract or cataract, it is treated.
